Here's the way I see it...Ninety percent of everything a person does involves great
effort. Good habits, discipline, and hard work can overcome bad circumstances. Kids learn through structure and repeated
fundamentals, strengthened by a daily encouragement to excel. While emphasis on technology and learning
methodology that will be utilized in the twenty-first century is an important
element of teaching, I believe that old school philosophies have a greater long
term impact for all children. Failure is a personal choice. A student
should not make an excuse for lack of effort.
The only failure is lack of effort. Students need to move from entitlement to responsibility and accountability
for all actions and learning. Although all children have
different capacities to learn, a teacher’s job is to teach students that
building fundamentally good habits, holding themselves accountable, and
responsibility for their actions, effort, and preparation is of utmost
importance. Focus should be on the
process rather than products to allow the student to build habits that enable
him or her to reach the fullest potential. Good habits lead to good outcomes.
